History[ edit ] Standup paddleboarding SUPthe act of propelling oneself on a floating platform with the help of a paddle or pole, traces back to thousands of years ago and across many continents, but its current form and popularity originated in Hawaii in the s.

Records of earlier forms of SUP have been found as early as 1, B.

Plenty of Fish / POF Rant - Girls STAY online (Hate Online Dating #12)

By contrast, the modern form of stand up paddle boarding, where a surfboard-like vessel is used, has a much clearer heritage, dating back to the s and emerging from a collection of loosely related activities by a few very specific characters, such as Duke Kahanamoku and Dave Kalama. Once it reached California in the early s, stand up paddling formed four epicenters, each with its own fountainhead: From there, the sport gained exponential popularity and California served as the catalyst for worldwide adoption.

BySUP, which had till then been almost entirely a surfing discipline, began to diversify into racing, touring, rivers, yoga, and fishing. Its surfing heritage coupled with its various disciplines made the sport attractive and accessible to everyone all over the world, paving the way for its global growth and enthusiastic adoption.

By the early s, Archie Kalepa and the Hobie Dream Team gave the world a hint that stand-up paddleboarding had a potential far grander than waves. Kalepa began unofficially participating in cross-channel races between the islands of Hawaii, making him one of the forefathers of downwind stand up paddle racing. Each would carefully pull his board in and out of board bags, trying to keep their edge in product development on the nascent race scene.

SUP originated in Africa where it was common practice for individuals to stand on their canoes and use their paddle to propel themselves forwards. This method was used by warriors in an attempt to conduct stealth attacks. These surfers used a paddle to operate boards that were otherwise unwieldy.

SUP continued in Tel Aviv in the twentieth century where lifeguards stood on wide boards to ensure a clear view of possible swimmers in distress. The lifeguards used a paddle to propel them through the water quickly to rescue swimmers.

The response to this new category was overwhelming, with many recognized surfers choosing to partake. The first magazine devoted to the sport, Standup Journal, was founded in June SinceTahoe SUP, led by founder Nate Brouwerhas directed the touring industry with innovative designs and materials that differ from that of surf-style boards.

Tour Paddle Boarding has become a way for individuals to seek adventure, serenity, personal achievement and a deeper connection with nature. Brouwer introduced a new shape, differing from the traditional surfing styles on the market and created a more accessible leisure activity that could be taken inland; The touring board can carry extra gear and has a more efficient hydro-glide.

With Piercing displacement hull, increased volume to carry a payload, and lowered stabilization standing platforms, touring board designs differ from SUP surfing boards significantly.

Brouwer met with several flat-water kayak manufacturers and distributors to create features that would allow for more comfort, stability, and efficiency. A major implemented feature from these interactions was the installation of deck plugs.

These are a built-in system designed for securing external cargo. The first kayak shop to distribute a touring paddle board was Tahoe City Kayakand now has rentals, lessons, and add-on equipment sales. And with that, standup paddling became a highly diversified discipline and its core foundations were then in place.

Popularity[ edit ] According to the Outdoor Foundation's Outdoor Participation Report, stand up paddle boarding was listed as the most popular outdoor activity among first-time participants. The report stated that the median age of stand up paddle boarding was 28 years old. This is up from 2. The highest participation rate was teenagers ages 14—17 1.

Some SUP boards use a hollow wood construction instead of foam with epoxy resin. This cleaner, eco-friendly process also greatly reduces the number of consumables in production, recycles the ABS off cuts and creates a longer lasting board.

In the last few years, inflatable boards have been introduced as well. The boards are generally longer than 9 feet 2,7 mand can be longer than 12 feet 3,6 mwith features such as padded decks and concave hulls; they generally have one or three surfboard-style fins in the stern for tracking.

Boards can also be a short as 7 feet, typically made out of high-performance Carbon Fiber. Boards such as these are used in Stand Up Paddle Surf competitions smaller boards are more maneuverable. Inflatable boards[ edit ] Performance surf boards were traditionally made from laminated layers over foam cores. SUP boards are larger boards and the desire to travel with them has led to the development of an inflatable system where the board and pump can be carried in a backpack.

The core material is called 'drop stitch'. Thousands of locked nylon stitches keep the board at a specific thickness. Pressure from specially designed hand pumps can inflate a board to over 30Psi. This makes inflatable paddle boards both durable and transportable.

Riverine SUP boards experiment with different fabrics and polymers to endure the abuse the board takes in the river. However, the jurisdictions [8] and rules requiring a PFD may vary according to the type of water: These regulations and requirements may be enforced seasonally during high-tourism seasons or all year.

Additionally, it is important to use a quick release belt [12] when paddling in whitewater conditions as this allows the paddler to safely detach from a tangled leash. In flat water environments localised regulations may require the use of a PFD such as on lakes, rivers and inland waterways.

In a teaching environment SUP schools and clubs individual risk assessments may require the use of PFD's for less confident stand up paddle boarders. The use of a leash is always recommended in all paddling environments and is a key piece of safety equipment.

Paddle[ edit ] A stand up paddle is used to propel an individual across the surface of the water while standing on a surfboard.

The paddle consists of a blade, shaft and handle. Materials and design[ edit ] Paddles used for stand up surfing are similar to but longer than traditional canoe paddles. They are usually constructed from carbon, fiberglass or wood with a flat blade on one end connecting to a handle on the other end by a long smooth shaft. The blade ranges from 6 to 10 inches in width with an oval or round shaft ranging from 67 to 86 inches in length with a 1 to 1.

Blades are designed with several shapes and features. Normally the blade has a banana peel shape sometimes with a slight keel on the back side of the blade. Other commonly used shapes include diamonds, or oars. Different blade shapes are sometimes used for different types of paddling conditions long-distance, flat lake water versus ocean surf for example. A common rule of thumb is a "shaka" length, or 5 to 7 inches, above the rider's height for surfing and about 10 inches above rider's head for racing.

Paddles are held with two hands, using a wide grip instead of keeping the hands close together. The proper way to hold the paddle is with the blade tilted away from the body. This propels the paddler through the water quicker. The push-pull method is the most effective way of paddling when stand up paddle boarding.

This method requires inserting the paddle gently into the water ahead of the feet, and then pulling it backwards and lifting it back out of the water.

The market comprises mostly walk-in shops in narrow alleyways which spill out onto to the pavement during opening hours by putting stalls out in front.

Whilst most shops allow bargaining, discounts are usually not on the same scale as some other street markets in Hong Kong. Shops offer a wide variety of clothes, footware, sportswear, jewellery, Chinese silk garments, paintings and artwork, toys and souvenirs. Some genuine designer fashion brands are available at this market but may be imperfect "seconds" and there are also outlet shops selling factory overruns and surplus stock.

Some shops specialise in large size clothing and footware which can be difficult to find elsewhere as many shops in Hong Kong stock only smaller Asian sizes. The market can become congested at weekends and during public holidays. Hong Kong Maritime Museum, which was located in Murray House, closed on 4th June and was relocated to much larger premises at Central Pier 8, where it reopened in early February Number 6 service is a popular tourist route which provides a scenic journey.

Also, bus 66 weekday peak hours service only from Exchange Square Bus Station terminates at Stanley Plaza, about 8 minutes walk from the market via escalators down through the plaza to the waterfront. The market which takes its name from the Tin Hau Temple which it bisects from north to south. Since the 's local residents had gathered under the shade of a large banyan tree in front of the temple, which soon attracted hawkers and local performers such as opera singers and martial arts exponents.

Ina site by the temple was given over by the government to the increasing number of hawkers, and was divided into stalls each measuring 3' x 4'. People wishing to start a business were required to join a public ballot and given a drawn number, which enabled them to set up a stall on the site.

Visitors should note that the market extends along both sides of the Tin Hau Temple and public square in Public Square Street.

Here nobody expects to pay anything like the marked prices and it is quite normal to "bargain" down to half the asking price. In the section of the market from Public Square Street towards Jordan Station can be found fortune tellers, palm and face readers and tarot card readers who, for a small sum offer to look into the future, and groups of Cantonese opera and, occasionally Western, singers and musicians. Performances are free for casual bystanders although donations are requested and each group usually has a sitting area close to the performers, popular with photographers, for which a small charge.

Cantonese opera performances do not usually take place when there is night racing at Happy Valley. Most stalls close between about pm and midnight. Closed on the first day of Chinese New Year. The market starts about metres down the street. Yuen Po Street Bird Garden In the 's, a dim sum restaurant on Shanghai Street in Mongkok became a popular venue for bird lovers who took along their caged birds and listened to the birds singing, whilst dining. Before long, hawkers selling bird feed set up stalls by the restaurant. When the restaurant was demolished the hawkers moved to a nearby side street, Hong Lok Street, and the number of hawker stalls grew to over The street was later named Bird Street and became a popular tourist attraction.

The Bird Garden, which runs the short distance between Flower Market Road and Boundary Street, houses 70 stalls and occupies an area of square metres. Entrance to Yuen Po Street Bird Garden Here, locals proudly take their songbirds for an outing in the fresh air in the attractive courtyards. The stalls selling a large variety of colourful birds including parrots and songbirds, food, cages, feeders and various other accessories.

The garden has some interesting architectural features including glazed bamboo-shaped ceramic roof tiles that reflect different hues of sunlight, carvings of many bird species on some marble screens mounted on the perimeter walls and a giant mural carving depicting over birds at the Boundary Street entrance. This is a large and for much of the time, a very busy market and navigating through the crowds here can be exhausting. The section of Tung Choi Street where the market operates is pedestrianised and closed to vehicles between 4pm and midnight on Mondays to Saturdays and between 12 noon and 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.

Most stalls are open by 1pm. Traditionally, Ladies Market has been closed on the first day of Chinese New Year but on this day in it was reported that many stores opened. The market runs along Fa Yuen Street from Mongkok Road to Prince Edward Road in Mongkok and is famous for its factory outlet stores with well known Western brands, cheap footwear shops and young trendy fashion.

A wide variety of other goods goods, including fashion accessories, toys, souvenirs, watches, electrical goods and fruit and vegetables. Many stallholders in this market only offer goods at fixed prices which are rock bottom although some are willing to bargain. There are also bargains to be had in the shops lining the street behind the market stalls. In November a tragedy occurred when, during the night, fire broke out in one of the stalls in the section of market between Bute Street and Argyle Street, which spread to an adjacent building resulting in the loss of nine lives.

Many shops are under the same ownership and, whilst shops often offer discounts, prices are generally no more competitive than those in department stores and outlet shops. However, the range of goods is extensive, with all the latest designs being available, and retailers here will often throw in a small free gift with purchases. Cheung Sha Wan Road "Fashion Street" is lined with over wholesale fashion outlets, many of whom sell retail to walk-in customers "Toy Street" Fuk Wing Street is lined with inexpensive toy shops as well as stationery and sportswear shops.

Walk-in customers are welcome at most shops. Also fabric market on Yen Chow Street. Buyers should be aware of counterfeit goods and "switch and bait" tactics.

Golden Computer Arcade and Golden Computer Centre are two separate malls on Fuk Wa Street, and are a Mecca for computer buffs with dozens of shops offering computer sales, fast repair, data recovery, software and every conceivable accessory. Bargaining is the norm but beware pirated and poor quality merchandise.

Other markets generally open varying times from about 10am until 8pm to 10pm. Some wholesale shops close on Sundays and public holidays. By the early 's there were only about 10 shops, but by the beginning of the 's the number of shops lining Canton Road from Jordan Road to Saigon Street had grown to over Following US President Richard Nixon's visit to China injade became a sought-after Chinese souvenir, particularly among Americans, and soon there were over shops and street stalls in the area.

Inin order to maintain better control, a site under a road traffic flyover was allocated to house all the street vendors and became the Jade Market, officially known "Yau Ma Tei Jade Hawker Bazaar". This is a rather gloomy indoor market on two adjacent sites, Zones A and B, on either side of Battery Street.

There are stalls in Zone A, the larger site, and stalls in Zone B. The market sells a vast array of jade products, particularly costume jewellery, figurines, beads, chopsticks and various souvenirs of various grades and colours with starting prices ranging from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars.

For custom-made jewellery its advisable to take a photo of what is required. Buyers need to be something of an expert in jade to be able to judge quality and caution should be exercised in buying high value items. When purchasing make sure what goes in the box is what has been chosen and inspect carefully for damage. A vast array of goods is on display at the Jade Market In Zone A, in addition to jade stalls, there are also 10 stalls occupied by some of the few remaining operators engaged in the ancient trade of letter-writing.

These stalls offer a range of services including English and Chinese letter writing, Chinese calligraphy and completion of application forms and tax returns.

The Jade Market also has several stalls occupied by operators engaged in the now rare trade of letter writing An area of Temple Street Night Market see above around Public Square Street also has a number of Jade stalls. Food, rocks, plants, bowls, tanks and every conceivable accessory to keep a fish happy is available here.

This is a popular market with locals as fish aquariums are believed to bring luck. The market is one block away from Fa Yuen Street Market. The first floor has shops spilling out on to the balcony selling a wide range of fabrics and textiles and there is a restaurant on the second floor. Unlike most other markets in Hong Kong this market rarely gets crowded and has a relaxed feel about it. Citybus services 1, 5B, 18 and 26 also pass the market.
